Clora Bryant: Film Screening + Live Quartet at Common Ground (Thurs 25 Sept)
Clora Bryant: Film + Live Jazz
Thursday 25 September • Common Ground, Oxford 7.30pm
We’d love to see you for the launch of Steph Pirrie Jazz at Common Ground—an inspiring evening shining a light on the remarkable Clora Bryant (1927–2019): trumpeter, bandleader, barrier-breaker, and joy-bringer.
We’ll begin with a short, beautiful documentary—Trumpetistically, Clora Bryant by filmmaker Zeinabu Irene Davis—and then flow straight into a live set with the Steph Pirrie Quartet. Expect swing, lyricism, and heart: music from Clora’s classic Gal with a Horn, plus audience favourites, and a preview of new originals from Steph’s forthcoming album.
Who was Clora Bryant?
Clora Bryant was a trumpet virtuoso with fearless style and wit—a musician who carved space for herself in a scene that didn’t make it easy for women. She toured, recorded, raised four children as a single parent, and still kept the horn singing. The film includes rare footage with Dizzy Gillespie, evocative scenes from the jazz age, and poignant reflections that reveal a woman full of spark, humour and resilience.
About the film
Trumpetistically, Clora Bryant (dir. Zeinabu Irene Davis) is a tender, insightful portrait of Clora’s artistry and life. Steph first saw the film a decade ago and, with the filmmaker’s blessing, is able to screen it on special occasions—making this Oxford showing a rare treat.
Live set: Steph Pirrie Quartet
After the film, the Steph Pirrie Quartet—featuring Tim Lapthorn and Noah Smith & Al Pirrie —takes the stage. We’ll celebrate Clora’s legacy with selections from Gal with a Horn, plus some favourites and sneak peeks from Steph’s soon to be released album.
